• Students are identified for the GATE program during their 3rd grade year through multiple measures including performance on the Cognitive Abilities Test, CAASPP (SBAC), and classroom functioning.  Students who qualify for the GATE program are placed with a GATE-certified teacher in 4th and 5th grade.  They work with the standard curriculum with added focus in the following areas: acceleration/pacing (moving faster when appropriate and given credit for what they already know), depth (opportunities for study of certain topics in greater depth to develop expertise), complexity (opportunities to make meaningful connections between curricular areas), and novelty (opportunites to share their knowledge in creative ways that highlight talents).

In addition, 4th and 5th graders who have been GATE-identified have the opportunity to attend RUSD's AstroCamp Field Trip.
