The mission of AVID is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
Our mission for this year in AVID is to become educated and responsible young adults, to accomplish every assignment to the best of our ability, and, most importantly, to have fun! THINK COLLEGE!
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a year-long elective course that prepares students for college readiness and success. Each week, students receive instruction that uses a rigorous college preparatory curriculum provided by AVID Center, tutor‐led study groups, motivational activities, and academic survival skills. In AVID, students participate in activities that use strategies focused on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading to support their academic growth.
The sixth grade AVID Elective course is an introduction to the AVID philosophy. Students will develop awareness of the values accompanying academic goals and success. The course will focus on building self-confidence and communication skills in working with peers and adults. Students will be exposed to reading strategies that will assist in vocabulary building and understanding a variety of texts, and will also focus on prewriting techniques, summary writing and structural components of note-taking. The students will increase college and career awareness through guest speaker presentations, field trip opportunities, and research.
AVID Quarterly Goal Setting
Students will write goals for their English, math, science, and social studies classes at the beginning of each quarter. At mid-quarter, students will record their grades and GPA. They will also reflection on their academic progress, revise their goals, and set a GPA goal. At the end of the quarter the students will record their grades, GPA, and reflect on their academic progress.
Every Tuesday students will participate in a binder check. Students should have all of their supplies. All papers should be in the correct subject section of the binder. There should be no papers in the front or back pockets of the binder or in folders. Students should be able to open their binder upside down and shake it.
