Welcome to a new school year! My name is Samantha Herlihy and I am the new K-2 SDC teacher. I have been teaching at Arroyo Verde in the 3-5 SDC class since 2015. I started working with students with special needs in 2007. In that time, I have worked with students from Kindergarten to Seniors in high school from multiple backgrounds and disablilites. Working with students with special needs is my passion!
It is important for me to create a learning environment that students feel safe in; to learn and grow in a way that works best for them. Getting students to engage in the acadmics they are learning is very important to me as a teacher. We do a lot of hands on learning with the assistance of visuals, and repetition. In my room, student's learn that it is okay to make mistakes because that is a part of how we learn, as well as, how to persevere when academics start to feel like a challenge.
The beginning of this school year is unique in that we will be starting online rather than in the classroom setting. I understand that this type of setting comes with its own set of challenges. It may be a bumpy start. However, I am optimistic that we will have a wonderful school year. My class moto is: We're going to make it work! I believe in this wholeheartedly because sometimes lessons need to be adjusted to meet certain needs and we make it work; even if it looks a little different than what I had planned for.
I can't wait to meet you and I'm excited to start this journey with you as we begin the 2020-2021 school year!
