Degrees and Certifications:
Mrs. Ruth Thompson
Teaching is a family tradition for me. My parents are both teachers, my grandparents were teachers, and several of my aunts and uncles are teachers. This is the beginning of my 16th year of teaching in the Redlands Unified School District. I received my Bachelor's Degree from UC Riverside and my teaching credential from the University of Redlands. I also have a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Concordia Univeristy. My teaching career started with student teaching at Clement Middle School (6th grade) and North Verdemont Elementary School (First Grade). I was then hired to teach 6th grade math and science at Clement Middle School. I moved over to Beattie Middle School when it opened and continued teaching science and math. I also spent several summers teaching 6th grade and 8th grade math intervention. When I started a family of my own, I decided to move down to elementary school and came over to Smiley to teach 4th grade. Teaching 4th grade was a lot of fun and I stuck with that for another 5 years. A spot in first grade opened up and I jumped on it and have been teaching first grade ever since. It's my favorite!!! I love the excitement for learning at this age and watching the growth that happens as my students mature. I finally have my classroom just how I want it and I plan to stay here for a while.
In addition to being a teacher, I am also a mother of 4 beautiful children and the wife of a teacher. My oldest is an 8th grader at Cope and she spends her time writing articles for the school newspaper and practicing gymnastics. I call her "muscles". Katie likes to help out in my classroom in the mornings, so the kids will get to know her well. Ellie, my 6th grader, is the second oldest. She also spends a great deal of time practicing gymnastics and loves to cook, which really helps when I come home tired from work. She will be a helper in the classroom, as well. My son, Mark, is a 2nd grader and he is a digital junkie. He would spend all day on electronics if I let him. He loves to read and is an aspiring engineer. The littlest member of our family is miss Emma. She is full of energy, constantly changes moods, and keeps me on my toes. She is turning 2 at the end of September. Mr. Thompson is a teacher at Rialto High School, where he runs the MESA (Math, Engineering, and Science Achievement) program and teaches Physics. We are a house full of nerds and love to spend our time researching experiments and blowing stuff up. It keeps things interesting!
It is such and privilege to teach here at Smiley! I look forward to working with every one of my students! I also love to hear from my past students, so don't hesitate to visit if you have a chance.
