Creating Safer Schools
Dear Redlands USD Families and Community,
Dear Redlands USD Parents and Families,
We take great pride in our wonderful teachers and amazing students, and we are always striving to improve the quality of education in our District. This is why our Board unanimously decided to place the Redlands Unified School District’s Student Health/Safety Classroom Repair Measure on the November 5, 2024 ballot.
All of our students deserve to learn in classrooms that are healthy and safe, but over 80% of local schools are more than 60 years old and in need of basic health and safety repairs. This bond measure will provide funding to create safer schools by:
- Removing asbestos, mold and lead
- Fixing leaky roofs
- Repairing deteriorating sewer, gas and electrical systems
- Repairing plumbing and bathrooms
- Protecting students from the impact of extreme heat
In the last school year alone, there were 45 school days that reached temperatures of 100 degrees or more with a high of 108. Because so many of our schools are over sixty years old, they also have old and inefficient grids with outdated wiring that cause more frequent power outages. This disrupts student learning and puts their health at risk.
This bond measure will help create safer schools by funding updates to our electrical grid and installing energy efficient windows, air conditioning systems, and shade structures.
The Redlands Unified School District Student Health/Safety Classroom Repair Measure is a $500 million bond measure. While the district has identified hundreds of millions in additional needs, after months of conversations with parents and community leaders, it focused on the most urgent school safety priorities in order to guarantee a tax rate that is no more than $45 per $100,000 of assessed, not market value.
Sincerely,
Juan Cabral, Superintendent
