Vision and Purpose
As Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to reshape the global landscape, Redlands Unified School District (RUSD) is committed to ensuring our students use these tools responsibly, purposefully, and in developmentally appropriate ways. Our vision is to use AI to amplify human potential: empowering educators to streamline routine tasks so they can spend more time on meaningful student connections, while equipping learners with the critical skills needed for a future-ready life. We're also implementing safeguards while working collaboratively with staff and families.
Purpose and Scope
The purpose of this document is to provide a clear framework for the safe and ethical application of AI within RUSD. This guidance applies to all students, staff, administrators, and third-party partners interacting with AI technologies for educational, administrative, or operational purposes. The framework encompasses all activities at school sites and across all district-level divisions to ensure a unified approach to AI governance throughout the organization. This document complements existing RUSD policies regarding ethics, student and staff Acceptable Use Policies (AUP), data privacy (FERPA/CIPA), academic integrity, and student conduct.
Definitions
- Artificial Intelligence (AI)
- Computer systems designed to perform tasks that traditionally require human intelligence, such as pattern recognition and decision-making.
- Generative AI (GenAI)
- A subset of AI that learns from massive datasets to create new, original content, including text, images, video, music, or code.
- Large Language Models (LLM)
- GenAI systems (e.g., Gemini, ChatGPT) trained on vast amounts of text to understand context and generate human-like conversation.
