The first day at a new school can be intimidating, but a program called Where Everybody Belongs, or WEB, is geared to help sixth-graders transitioning to middle school.

On Tuesday, Aug. 7, the day before school starts for the Redlands Unified School District, seventh- and eighth-grade students at Beattie Middle School in Highland welcomed sixth-graders with an orientation that included games, tours and a barbecue lunch.

Student leaders were trained over the summer and will continue to support the new students as mentors throughout the school year.

“The purpose of WEB is to enfold our incoming sixth-graders so they feel like they’re part of our campus, a part of our community, and begin to understand the educational expectations of our amazing school,” teacher Dale Whitehurst, who helped implement the program, said in a news release.
