The Redlands Unified School District welcomed a new member and elected new officers for the upcoming year during its Dec. 11 meeting.

The meeting opened with a performance of Christmas songs by a student choir.

Before getting into the agenda items, recently elected Ricardo Ruiz and re-elected Patty Holohan were sworn into their next four-year terms.

Ruiz was elected for trustee area 2, filling a seat vacated by Donna West who was elected at-large.

West lives in area 5, an area now represented by Jim O’Neill who is two years into a four-year term.

Holohan serves area 1.

“Redlands is an awesome city — one of the few cities where you don’t have to be rich to live in a nice and safe area where you can truly blossom,” said Ruiz while thanking the voters for supporting him.

The board then elected its officers for 2019 selecting Highland resident Cristina Puraci as board president, Highland resident Alex Vara as vice president and Holohan as clerk. Puraci and Vara were elected in the board’s last at-large elections in 2016.

As Highland residents, they both live within trustee area 4 which will be represented by just one seat following the 2020 elections, which will complete the board’s transition to by-trustee area voting.
