The Redlands Student Connections League (RSCL) kicks off its first double-header of intramural soccer games this Thursday, January 24 at 3:15 p.m.
Clement Middle School will host its first matchup with Beattie Middle School and Moore Middle School will host its first game with Cope Middle School.
"The formation of RSCL marks the first time in at least 25 years that the District has seen organized athletics on our middle school campuses," said Pat Hafley, District Athletic Director.
According to researchers from Sacred Heart University, De Paul University and the National School Climate Center, "participation in school-based extracurricular activities or afterschool programs has been shown to foster a sense of school connectedness."
The RSCL was born out of this desire to provide an opportunity for students to be connected to their school through athletic extracurricular activities.
The hope is to help students achieve positive outcomes within and beyond the classroom.
A study from the National Center for Education Statistics found that participation in extracurricular activities was positively associated with consistent attendance, academic achievements and aspirations for continuing education beyond high school for students.
Furthermore, the same study found that these activities can help students learn the value of teamwork and collaboration and help them develop both physical strength and endurance.
Hafley stated that basketball would be the next sport to debut in the upcoming fourth quarter of this school year. Next year, he said volleyball would lead followed by softball.
RSCL is open to all eligible middle school students.
