Redlands East Valley High School selects new head football coach

REDLANDS, CA – It’s an exciting time to be a Wildcat. Redlands East Valley High School (REV) has selected its new head varsity football coach – Richard Lunsford.

While Lunsford has been a head coach since 2012, he has coached high school football for the last 15 years.

“He will have high expectations both on and off the field to build excellent athletes, excellent students and excellent citizens,” said Jennifer Murillo, Principal at REV. “It is clear that character, leadership and integrity are as important to him as they are to us. They are essential components of the REV Way.”

In addition to his coaching assignment, Lunsford will be joining REV’s teaching staff as a credentialed physical education teacher.

“Academics is first and foremost a priority,” said Lunsford. “The majority of my players may not go on to play football after high school, but it is my duty to instill proper education in all of my students so that they all become productive members of society.”

Lunsford not only commands classroom success, he commends it. He currently has a 100 percent graduation rate. He said he has celebrated those who have been honored as National Football Foundation Scholar Athletes and All State Players.

He will be joining REV after his third season as the beloved head coach of Arlington High School in Riverside. At Arlington, his team made two appearances in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) – Southern Section post-season playoffs.

“Coach Lunsford comes to us being highly recommended as a dynamic leader with a competitive spirit,” said Rhonda Fouch, REV Athletic Director. “These are all tremendous qualities to bring an already successful football program to the next level.”

Fouch was quick to give credit for the successes their football program has seen in recent years to all the leaders and stakeholders past and present.

The 2018 REV Wildcat football schedule may be one of the most challenging in the Inland Empire, but Lunsford said he fully embraces the opportunity to prepare his student-athletes to compete at a high level.

No stranger to the lack of a home stadium, he has vowed to make every field they play on REV’s home field.

The selection of Lunsford symbolizes a homecoming itself. At REV, Lunsford will be teaching and coaching in a community he already resides in with his wife of 2 years – Jacqlene Lunsford.

His official first day is February 20.
